Beauty Eating: Find Beauty Secrets in the Foods You Eat

Like so many other people, I’m really focused on kicking of the new year right by engaging in healthier eating. I can’t say that I’m an expert in clean eating yet, but I certainly have been enjoying some of the benefits of eating cleaner. One of the most amazing things about natural food, is the fact that it contains so many healing properties. We all know the health benefits to losing weight and lowering your cholesterol, but I’ve recently discovered that there are some amazing things you can put in your body, that are actually beauty secrets to help the way you look physically. As I continue to be the best me possible, I’m can’t wait to start incorporating some of these changes in my diet and lifestyle.

Things to Avoid

  1. Refined Sugar: We know the effect the inflammation from refined sugar does to your waistline, but it also can cause acne, gum disease, and tooth decay. I’m already rethinking those donuts I was craving last night.
  2. Smoking: If you’ve read the article about common skincare mistakes to avoid, then you already know that cigarette smoke is a no no. Cigarette smoke narrows the blood vessels in the top layer of your skin, which means your skin isn’t getting proper blood flow or the necessary nutrients. End result?: Premature aging and wrinkles. We also know that cigarette smoke yellows the teeth, and kills your beautiful smile.
  3. Highly Processed Foods: Besides the inflammation highly processed foods cause, they also don’t have enzymes that skin, hair, and nail cells need to grow and regenerate.

Beauty Foods

  1. Healthier skin. Alpha Hydroxyl Acids (AHAs) have been a skincare staple since as far as the ancient Egyptians. They help dissolve the dead skin cells that clog oil glands and cause pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. It also lightens dark spots on the skin. Eating different fruits in general is great for your skin, since it’s both nutritionally dense and hydrating. Recommended Foods: Grapes, strawberries, and pineapple can be used as topical skin exfoliants.
  2. Heal blemishes. Oxalic Acid can be poisonous in high quantities, but the lower quantities in certain foods has been shown to clear the skin and heal blemishes. Recommended Foods: Almonds, beets, cashews, and Swiss chard.
  3. Brighter smile. Some foods with mild acids can remove stains from teeth. Recommended Foods: Apple cider vinegar.
  4. Long flowing hair. Selenium is a mineral found in certain foods that supports the immune system to protect the body from cell damage. Getting enough selenium also aids in healthy thyroid functioning. A healthy thyroid prompts the growth and regrowth of hair and nail cells. Recommended Foods: Barley, crimini mushrooms, Brazil nuts.

By incorporating these foods into your diet, you are benefiting in multiple ways. Not only will look better, but you will be adding great nutritional value to your overall health and well-being. As I strive to be the best version of myself, these little jewels of information make me excited.
